Rennae Stubbs, former coach of Serena Williams, believes Iga Swiatek is set to excel with her new coach, Wim Fissette. Swiatek, who recently parted ways with her longtime coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, will compete at the 2024 WTA Finals starting November 2, where her year-end No. 1 ranking will be on the line against Aryna Sabalenka.
During Wiktorowski’s nearly three-year tenure, Swiatek captured the 2022 US Open and three French Open titles. Speculation regarding a rift led to Wiktorowski’s departure, but he dismissed these rumors as false. Swiatek’s choice of Fissette comes after he previously coached Naomi Osaka and guided her to significant Grand Slam victories.
Stubbs anticipates that Fissette’s positive approach will resonate well with Swiatek, helping her manage the stress she often experiences on the court. “I think it’ll go great because Wim will come in with new ideas,” Stubbs stated on her podcast. “Iga will probably do great and will look like a legend.”
However, Stubbs also pointed out a recurring trend in the coaching world, where men, like Fissette, often quickly find new opportunities after previous stints, regardless of past outcomes. Despite her criticism, she remains optimistic about Swiatek’s potential under Fissette’s guidance.
