In his Shanghai Masters defeat, Daniil Medvedev acknowledged that he struggled to challenge Jannik Sinner due to a shoulder injury.
In their Shanghai quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, fifth seed Medvedev lost to the world No. 1 6-1, 6-4. Early on, it was clear that Medvedev, the Shanghai champion in 2019, was having trouble with his serve and seemed to frequently hold his shoulder.
Medvedev will be included in the lineup for the 2025 edition of the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, following the confirmations of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. After defeating the Italian in the grand final, the Russian joins the top two players in the world at the location where he was crowned champion in 2023.
As a result, Alcaraz is making his debut, two previous champions are competing, and the world number one is defending his title, ensuring a strong field for the tournament in the Netherlands.
