Even though they weren’t there on Dominic Thiem’s last day in Vienna, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic made sure to send a heartfelt message of respect to the retiring Austrian player.

The Vienna organizers threw a special evening for the former world No. 3 as he gets ready to compete in his final tournament. Some well-known tennis players, including Boris Becker, Tommy Haas, Matteo Berrettini, and others, attended the 2020 US Open champion’s one-set exhibition match against Alexander Zverev on Sunday.

A video message from two of his fiercest opponents was played at one point. In response to Thiem’s retirement, Federer emphasized his admiration for Thiem as a person and as a player and wished him luck.

Federer wished Thiem good luck and said: “You were always a super guy, also off the court. Always fair. Your friendship was important on the tour. We always got along well, and it was great for me. All the best with the future, and huge congratulations on your unbelievable career, Dominic. I am sure we will see each other soon, but for now, have a great evening.”

Before expressing his desire to see Thiem perform well in Vienna, Djokovic, who defeated him in that nail-biting five-set 2020 Australian Open final, acknowledged the 31-year-old’s success and influence.

Djokovic said in his tribute message: “Thank you very much for all that you have given to all of us, but particularly tennis. I’m glad that you have the opportunity to say goodbye in Vienna. One last dance. I wish you a great tournament with all your family members present and celebrate it because you deserve it, my friend. All the best.”
