Aryna Sabalenka has stated that she has learned a lot from losing to Coco Gauff in the 2023 US Open final, which is why she is so happy about it.
The three-time Grand Slam champion clarified that she has been able to stay focused in matches where the crowd is against her thanks to the experience of losing.
After appearing to be in a strong position to win the second set, Sabalenka lost to Gauff 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 in last year’s US Open championship match. She acknowledged that she was impacted by the loudly pro-Gauff crowd during the match.
Last week, the world No. 2 defeated Zheng Qinwen, the home favourite from China, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in a fiercely contested title match at the Wuhan Open.
During her press conference following her Wuhan victory, Sabalenka was questioned about how her past experience playing against crowd favourites had aided her in her match against Zheng.
She expressed her thoughts about it and said: “I’m not really focusing on the crowd when they’re against me anymore. I don’t really hear them. I’m just focusing on myself and my team. I’m trying to stay focused and keep thinking about what I have to do on the court, like just thinking about tactics and technical issues. Yeah, that’s it. I think that match against Coco [in the US Open final] last year gave me a lot. I’m actually really glad I lost that match because I think it was better for me.”
She added: “I learned a lot. Right now, if the crowd is against me, I’m okay with that. I don’t really hear them. I’m focusing on different things, yeah.”
