Nick Kyrgios couldn’t help but poke fun at fellow Australian Bernard Tomic after Tomic suffered a humiliating defeat in the ATP Challenger final. Tomic was defeated by American Learner Tien in the shortest ATP Challenger final on record, lasting only 39 minutes, with a score of 6-0, 6-1 in Fairfield, Connecticut.
This disappointing result overshadowed Tomic’s best performance since 2018, as he had made it to the final after a promising week. However, his efforts quickly fizzled out in a dismal display, making the match four minutes shorter than the previous record set by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2019.
The irony wasn’t lost on tennis fans, as Tomic also holds the record for the fastest ATP Tour loss, which he achieved a decade ago. Kyrgios, known for his sharp wit, took to social media to share his reaction, simply posting a laughing emoji in response to the news.
“It feels like we just did the introductions,” commented ATP Challenger commentator Mike Cation during the match. He elaborated that the experience level and mental stamina required to compete against a player like Tien can be daunting, especially for a veteran like Tomic.
Despite saving three break points and avoiding a double bagel, Tomic struggled significantly, recording six double faults throughout the match. After the loss, he acknowledged the mental challenge of keeping up after dropping the first few games, admitting, “I’m sorry I couldn’t keep with my legs.”
While Tomic’s ranking saw a slight improvement following the match, climbing to 207th in the world, he continues to bear the burden of holding two unwanted ATP records. His latest loss to Tien further cements his reputation as a player who struggles to perform on the biggest stages, making Kyrgios’s jibe all the more pointed.
