Djokovic after losing the Shanghai final: “Sinner? He reminds me of me”

In the 2024 Shanghai Masters final, Novak Djokovic praised the Italian after losing to Jannik Sinner. The Serb also revealed that World No. 1's ability to suffocate and distinguish himself from his opponents reminded him of himself.

Sinner And Djokovic With Trophy

After losing to Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Shanghai Masters final, Novak Djokovic showered the Italian with praise. The Serb also disclosed how he was reminded of himself by the world No. 1’s capacity to distance himself from his rivals and suffocate them.

Djokovic was asked if there was anything about Sinner’s game that made him think of himself during the press conference held after the match. Highlighting some of the main elements that made Sinner a dangerous player, the Serb praised the Italian’s performance.

Djokovic expressed his thoughts about it and said: “All around, you know, every shot he’s got in the game. He’s improved his serve tremendously; I think that became a big weapon. He’s just very aggressive from the baseline. As soon as he’s got a shorter ball, he’s taking the initiative. Just very solid from forehand and backhand, doesn’t make too many mistakes, and just tries to take away the time from the opponent.”

The 24-time Major champion believed that the Italian’s skill of applying pressure and suffocating his opponents with his fast-paced style of play was a tactic he himself employed during his career.

The 23-year-old’s impressive consistency this year was also commended by him. Sinner won his seventh championship of the year at the Shanghai Masters.

He further said: “You know, that’s something that reminds me of myself throughout my career; that’s what I’ve done for so many years consistently, you know, playing fast-paced tennis, taking away time from the opponent, kind of suffocating the opponent, if you want, in a certain way. That’s what you want; you want your opponents to always feel under pressure from your shots, from your speed, and from your presence on the court. So he’s got that; I mean, this year he’s been so consistent, it’s really, really impressive.”
