At the Shanghai Masters, Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to win his seventh title of the year.
To make amends for his loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the China Open last week, the world No. 1 defeated the 24-time Grand Slam champion 7-6(4) 6-3.
Sinner expressed his thoughts after the win and said: “It was a very tough match playing against Novak. It’s one of the toughest challenges we have. I’m obviously very, very happy with my situation. He was serving great in the first set. I really couldn’t find a way to break him, and then I played a very good breaker in the first set, which gave me the confidence to start off well in the second. Obviously, I was very happy with my performance throughout this whole tournament. It’s a very special one.”
After defeating Tomas Machac in the semifinals on Saturday, the Italian made sure he would end the year at the top of the rankings. He then used some of his best tennis to defeat Djokovic, who had experienced hip pain during his own semi-final victory over Taylor Fritz.
Sinner was seen filming a video with supporters following the game as he celebrated winning the Shanghai title, and it was raining.
He said while making a video with fans: “Hi guys, I am very happy to hold this trophy here. It has been an amazing week. Now it’s also raining. So I am happy that we finished the match. You know, the crowd has been amazing. See you already next year.”
