In an incredible year, Jannik Sinner has won seven titles. In the Shanghai Masters final, he defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
In their fifth meeting, the Italian star, who is expected to finish the season ranked No. 1, displayed formidable form by defeating Djokovic 7-6 (4) 6-3. Despite claims that the 37-year-old is still a formidable force in men’s tennis, the victory kept Djokovic from winning what would have been a historic 100th career title.
Sinner remained composed during a tense moment at 0-30, down 4-5, in a hotly contested first set. He then quickly took charge in the tiebreak. When Sinners launched a relentless attack in the fourth game of the second set, Djokovic lost because he missed crucial opportunities, most notably a backhand volley gone wrong.
With no danger to his serve the entire time, Sinner sealed his victory with a dominant ace in front of spectators like Carlos Alcaraz and Roger Federer.
Reflecting on his performance, Sinner commented: “It was a very tough match, obviously. Playing against Novak is one of the toughest challenges we have, and I’m obviously very, very happy with how I handled the situation. He was serving great in the first set, I really couldn’t find a way to break him. I played a very good breaker in the first set, which gave me the confidence to start off well in the second set. Obviously, I was very happy with the performance throughout this whole tournament. It’s obviously a very special one.”
Sinner passed amusing comments in the Shanghai final as Alcaraz and Federer were watching him play against Djokovic.
Sinner said in his post-match press conference in a funny way: “I see legends everywhere.”
