Coco Gauff recently opened up about how she deals with online trolls after winning the 2024 China Open, taking the time to reflect on what she calls her “kid-like” mindset when facing criticism. Despite her success in Beijing, where she dominated the tournament and ultimately defeated Karolina Muchova to claim her first WTA 1000 title of the season, Gauff faced online negativity.
Gauff, who had previously won four of her seven titles at WTA 250 events, was often criticized by online trolls for not being able to secure bigger titles. However, after her China Open victory, she responded to the criticism by posting a picture of herself with the trophy on Instagram. The caption was a subtle jab at her detractors: “She only wins 250s, Well… Whomp Whomp.”
While some fans applauded Gauff’s clap-back, others suggested she should ignore the negative feedback and focus on the positive support. One user on X (formerly Twitter) even compared her reaction to that of a “five-year-old.” In her response, Gauff emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive and creative outlook, much like children do.
“Honestly kids have the best outlook on life. they are so positive and creative. so I’ll take it❤️,” Gauff wrote. “My goal this tournament was to play and enjoy tennis as much as I did when I was a kid because that’s when life was/is the most fun!”
By embracing a youthful perspective, Gauff has shown that even at the age of 20, her approach to tennis and life remains grounded in the joy of the game, despite the constant presence of online criticism.
