Tomas Machac and Carlos Alcaraz engaged in amusing banter following their thrilling matchup at the Shanghai Masters. On October 11, the two faced off in the Masters 1000 quarterfinals, with Machac emerging victorious.
Alcaraz had won 12 straight games going into the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals. But a strong performance from Tomas Machac, who stopped the Spaniard from controlling the match with his superb serving and high winners tally, put an end to his run.
After taking a tiebreaker to take a one-set lead, Machac broke Alcaraz at the end of the second set to win the match 7-6 (5), 7-5. The Czech player advanced to his first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal with his second top-5 victory of the year. Alcaraz thanked Machac via an Instagram Story following the competition, displaying a remarkable amount of humility.
Machac apologized in good humour for the level he displayed during their match and thanked Alcaraz for his kind remarks.
Alcaraz wrote: “Congratulations @tomas machac! Well played today. I am disappointed to lose, but happy with a great Asian swing!”
Machac responded, resharing Alcaraz’s Instagram story: “Thank you Sorry for my level today.”
