French player Richard Gasquet has made the decision to retire from professional tennis. Though not right away, he has announced his final performance date, which will take place in 2025 at Roland-Garros in front of his home crowd.

Gasquet, who has fallen to 133rd in the world rankings, had been hinting at his upcoming retirement since the start of the season before he finally announced it in a recent interview.

He recently announced this and said: “It’s the best tournament to do it. It’s beautiful; we’re lucky to be French and be able to retire in this kind of incredible place. An end is always complicated; all the former great players have often told me that it’s not easy to announce it. You never know when, how, or where. Here, in any case, it goes without saying.”

Gasquet has been a professional since 2002 and has been in the top 100 for 19 years running, or 956 weeks in a row. While it’s difficult to see him ranking among the top 100 players in the world at Roland-Garros, it would be shocking if he wasn’t given a main draw wild card for his farewell match.

Gasquet has 16 ATP Tour victories under his belt, the most recent coming in Auckland last year. He has defeated 36 players ranked in the Top 10 and has made two appearances in the Nitto ATP Finals, in 2007 and 2013.
