Maria Sakkari will not be playing tennis in 2024, as she will be concentrating all of her efforts on healing from a shoulder injury and getting ready for the 2025 season to begin.
In addition to missing out on Guadalajara, where she was expected to return as the defending champion, and going without a break since the US Open, the former world No. 3 also missed out on back-to-back WTA 1000 events in Beijing and Wuhan.
The 29-year-old has since likely decided that it would be best to call it a year given the current situation, as pushing for a comeback could aggravate her injury and make it worse for the following season.
The Greek player admitted that this wasn’t the year she had hoped for after going just 21-14 and falling to No. 22 in the rankings. But she’s still optimistic that she can learn from some of it and have a huge comeback year in 2025.
Sakkari announced through a message posted on her Instagram Story: “For the last few weeks, my main focus has been on recovering from my shoulder injury. Unfortunately, due to this, I will have to end my season earlier than planned. I will be back stronger and pain-free. Thank you all for your support. It’s been a challenging year, but it has taught me a lot as well. See you soon in Australia.”
