Frances Tiafoe has publicly apologized for his heated outburst directed at chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote following his third-round loss to Roman Safiullin at the Shanghai Masters. The match, which lasted over three hours, saw Tiafoe lose his temper after receiving a time violation during a crucial tiebreak at 5-5 in the final set.
Tiafoe furiously contested the umpire’s call, repeatedly shouting, “I was ready to serve.” After losing the point and eventually the match, the American directed expletives at the umpire before issuing an apology on Instagram, acknowledging, “That is not who I am.”
Tiafoe added, “I let my frustration in the heat of the moment get the best of me… I want to apologize to the umpire, the tournament, and the fans.” As per ATP rules, Tiafoe may face fines up to $60,000 for his behavior. Despite the incident, Tiafoe has enjoyed a strong season, with finals appearances at the Citi and Cincinnati Opens, and a semi-final run at the U.S. Open.
