At the China Open in Beijing in 2024, Coco Gauff won her first WTA 1000 title and was overjoyed. The American player acknowledged the importance of the moment during her post-win press conference, but she made it clear that she did not cry.
On Sunday, Gauff won her second career WTA 1000 trophy with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory over Karolina Muchova, a familiar opponent. It’s interesting to note that at the Cincinnati Open in 2023, she defeated her Czech opponent to win her first title in the category.
Speaking about how she approached the title clash, Gauff said: “I was super relaxed going in. I was just like, I don’t know, this match is not going to change my life. When you go into matches like that, it’s super relaxed. I think also the experience of winning a 1000-level title in the past. Yeah, that tournament was great confidence. Again, it didn’t change my life.”
But Gauff clarified that she didn’t cry after the much-needed victory when asked if she did. She added: “Oh, no, I didn’t cry. It might be something in my eye. Trust me, I have cried after winning before. No, I didn’t cry today. There must have been something in my eye. But I am the first to admit when I cry. No, I don’t think I’ll cry. Today was just like, Yeah, it’s cool. It was not a crying day.”
