At the Vienna Open later this month, Dominic Thiem is getting ready to retire. After struggling with multiple injuries, the former US Open champion had declared earlier in the year that he was retiring.
For over ten years, the Austrian has had several ups and downs while competing on the Tour. In an era dominated by the ‘Big 3’, he is one of the few players to win a Grand Slam title (the 2020 US Open).
However, Thiem’s numerous injuries over the past few years have prevented him from consistently performing at a high level.
The former Slam champion said he was prepared for a change of pace in an interview with Heute. Theim, who called tennis one of the most alienating sports, expressed his readiness to return home and support his nation.
Thiem recently talked about it and said: “I’ve travelled enough. But I believe that I can help from Austria. Tennis is one of the lonely sports there is.”
Thiem also discussed his recent struggles, describing them as a wild ride. But he didn’t hesitate to add that it will take some getting used to life without tennis.
He added: “The last few months have been a rollercoaster ride. But I won’t really be able to move on until a foggy day in November.”

Now the world no.275, Thiem played his last match on the 26th of August when he lost to world no.16 Ben Shelton 6-4 6-2 6-2 in the 1st round of the U.S. Open (draw).
This season the Austrian has a compiled 7-13 win-loss record.
He is also scheduled to play in Vienna (Erste Bank Open). The main draw will start on the 21st of October.
