Medvedev explains why he lost his temper against the umpire in Shanghai

At the Shanghai Masters, Daniil Medvedev moved to defend himself following his outburst at the umpire. The Russian defeated Matteo Arnaldi 5-7 6-4 6-4 in his second-round match, but the match's highlight was the intense exchange midway through the second set.

Medvedev With Umpire

After his outburst at the umpire, Daniil Medvedev moved to defend himself at the Shanghai Masters. The ferocious exchange that occurred halfway through the second set overshadowed the Russian’s 5-7 6-4 6-4 victory over Matteo Arnaldi in his second-round match.

The 28-year-old Medvedev angrily reacted after being given a code violation, seemingly insulting the official.

After receiving a point penalty, he was obviously furious, but he was still able to maintain his composure and win the set and the match.

Medvedev had previously lost to Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round, so this wasn’t the first time he had gotten into a fight with the umpire. The world No. 5 further contended that he had been incorrectly accused of using foul language before his punitive action after defeating Arnaldi.

He talked about it and said: “What I did is, I got angry when they first called violation.  So I made the impression that I was saying something under my hand or under my mouth—how do you say it?—but I didn’t say anything; I was murmuring something like, ‘Oh, you’re bad, you’re bad, you’re bad.”

He added: “Then I got the second code, which I guess could be, you know, maybe deserved, and then I went crazy. But I knew that at that moment. If I managed the moment of the match, I lost the first set; if I managed to use it to my advantage, I could do it, and I managed to do it.”
