Jannik Sinner said he was tired and needed a day off after defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday at the Shanghai Masters.

Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated tenacious Italian Matteo Arnaldi 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, and Daniil Medvedev, who defeated China’s Wu Yibing in straight sets, will also be joining him in the round of 16.

Only three days after losing to Alcaraz in the China Open final in Beijing, a tired-looking Sinner lost the opening set in a tiebreak to the 37th-ranked Etcheverry.

However, in the second set, the 23-year-old bounced back, breaking Etcheverry twice to tie the score before winning easily.

Sinner talked after the win and said: “I felt like it was a tough set that I lost. I had chances.. but you know, these things can happen. He played a very very great tiebreak. I had to accept it and restart from 0. It was a tough match physically and also mentally. I’m very happy that I’m through this one. Let’s see what’s coming.”

Sinner added: “Tomorrow is one day off, which I really need, I felt it physically today. I had some chances in the first set but couldn’t use them. I’m very happy with how I bounced back.”
