Roger Federer is definitely not at his very best. The Swiss legend has played his first match after recovering from his back injury, and he needs to get rid of some rust in his game.
Roger was playing #nextgen Taylor Fritz in his opener in Stuttgart on grass, but that wasn’t easy. Roger wasn’t as sharp as usual, and he won the match only at the very end when he broke Fritz in the 9th game of the decider. The American could have easily won the contest, but Roger was extremely effective in defending eight break points of 9.
Federer. My next goal is…
Roger commented “I can take a lot of confidence out of this match. I need to improve a few things, but I served big, and I was able to handle three sets over two days, and find some energy at the end of the match. I know I have an extra gear.
My next goal is to stretch leads once I get a lead, I need to know that I can protect it and then take the next step.”
Next vs. Florian Mayer
Roger will play home favorite Florian Mayer for a place in the semifinal. The head to head is 6-0 for Roger that has conceded just 1 set to the German during their encounters.
