Zhang Shuai, after a stellar performance in the 2024 China Open, downplayed comparisons to her favorite tennis player, Rafael Nadal. The Chinese star, known for her strong showings at her home event, secured a fourth-round victory against 23rd seed Magdalena Frech, setting her up for another potential quarterfinal appearance.

Despite being asked about her success at the China Open and how it resembles Nadal’s dominance on the French Open’s clay, Zhang was quick to reject the notion, emphasizing that the comparison doesn’t hold up. “I can’t compare with my favorite player,” Zhang explained. “I mean, on this surface, I play so comfortably, like Rafa on Chatrier at the French Open, but I’m still very far away from what Rafa has achieved.”

Zhang also shared her growing comfort with playing on the China Open’s centre court, acknowledging her extensive experience in the tournament. “I’m really special for the China Open because I think I’ve played here almost every year, maybe more than 15 times,” she said. “I know this court, I know everything better than anyone, and I know how to win on this court.”

As Zhang continues her impressive run, the seasoned player remains grounded, despite her exceptional performances at the China Open.
