Jannik Sinner has taken the top spot in the ATP Tour wins for the 2024 season, leading the field with 58 victories (58-5) according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The 23-year-old Italian broke his tie with Alexander Zverev after defeating Czech Jiri Lehecka in the China Open quarterfinals, advancing with a 6-2, 7-6(6) win. This marks Sinner’s 14th consecutive win, solidifying his dominance on the tour.

Sinner’s victory didn’t come easily, especially in the second set, where he faced two set points at 4/6 in the tie-break. But the Italian rallied with impressive returns and serves to close out the match in one hour and 45 minutes. Reflecting on the battle, Sinner said, “We always try to improve day by day, and I feel like the result is coming from how consistent you are as a player. You also have to be ready mentally to do that.”

Sinner’s mental toughness has been on full display this season, with his consistent performance earning him 50 straight wins against players outside the Top 20 in the world. Against Lehecka, Sinner demonstrated control for most of the match, not facing a break point until 5-5 in the second set. Despite the pressure from Lehecka, Sinner held firm and found a way to win without needing a third set, something he couldn’t do in his previous two matches in Beijing.

Now leading the PIF ATP Rankings, Sinner’s next challenge will be local favorite Buyunchaokete, who upset fourth-seed Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4. Sinner remains focused, believing that there is still room for improvement. “I felt like I had some chances in the second set a little bit before, I couldn’t use them. But then it gets a bit tricky… I served well fortunately, and in the tie-break everything can happen.”

As the reigning Australian Open and US Open champion, Sinner’s current form positions him as one of the players to watch for the rest of the 2024 season. With an unrelenting work ethic and the ability to thrive under pressure, he’s showing the tennis world what it takes to reach the top.
