The feud between Stefanos Tsitsipas and his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, came to light during the Canadian Open 2024. Tsitsipas yelled at his father in the middle of the game, pleading with him to leave right away.
After Stefanos’ crushing loss, his team underwent a significant transformation. As coach, Tsitsipas dismissed his father. Apostolos has finally talked about the emotional fallout from the dreaded day, more than a month later.
Things eventually calmed down, but the aftermath of the father-son altercation during the game remained a mystery to all. Ultimately, on September 28, Apostolos discussed his thoughts about the incident with them and disclosed that Stefanos had indeed apologized to him multiple times.
Apostolos talked about it and said: “Athletes are under a lot of pressure. Many times they will go out of their way. Rightly so. It’s difficult for the spectators at times to understand the emotions of the players. And it certainly takes a good amount of time for the players as well to channel their emotions the right way. At some point, someone will mature and understand that they have to manage it. Stefanos Tsitsipas is a very good boy and has a good soul.”
Apostolos made a further distinction between evaluating an athlete’s conduct and the athlete as a whole.
He added: “We do not judge the athlete, we judge his behaviour in the stadium. I received many apologies, not one. The problem is not the apology, the problem is for him to understand why this is the reason.”
While looking for a new full-time coach, the world No. 11 has been training with Dimitris Hadjinikolaou, the captain of Greece in the Davis Cup. Tsitsipas lost to Jack Draper in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters and to Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round of the US Open in his two tournaments following the split. It’s interesting that his attempt to get a coach has just failed.

Now the world no.12, the Greek played his last match on the 26th of September when he capitulated to world no.49 Alex Michelsen 4-6 6-1 6-2 in the 1st round in Tokyo (draw).
During this season the Greek has achieved a compiled 37-18 win-loss record. Tsitsipas clinched 1 title in Monte-Carlo. The Greek was the runner-up in Barcelona.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will square off with the world no.660 John Isner in the Round Robin on Sunday at 6:00 pm on CENTER COURT. Their head to head is 6-2 for Tsitsipas.
