When Taylor Fritz recalled his 2024 US Open semifinal victory over Frances Tiafoe, he said it was one of the most nerve-wracking matches of his career. After a long five sets, Fritz finally prevailed, making it to his first Grand Slam final and sending Tiafoe to his second semifinal defeat at Flushing Meadows.
On Friday, September 6, Fritz and Tiafoe faced off in Arthur Ashe Stadium to become the first American to make it to a Major final since Andy Roddick did so at the 2009 Wimbledon Championships. The much anticipated all-American match did not let down as Fritz won the second and fourth sets to set up a fifth, and Tiafoe won the first and third.
Fritz easily defeated Tiafoe in the fifth and final set, 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the US Open final.
Recently, Fritz appeared as a guest on a podcast, where he had an open discussion with former American tennis players John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Jack Sock. Fritz stated that his favourite US Open memory was winning in the semifinals against Tiafoe when he was on the podcast.
The world No. 7 opened up about the tension he felt due to the high stakes during the match. Fritz added that his anxiety was heightened by being ready for the game.
Fritz talked about it and said: “I’d say the biggest moment, like that feelgood moment was winning the semifinal match, and just it being over because that was genuinely one of the most stressful matches I’ve ever played, like, going into it.”
He added: “You also had to sit on it for two days after a quarterfinal match and I’m like, ‘Oh, man! I’m playing Frances to make it to the finals. Both of us are going to be so tight, like, we’re both playing to be like the American to make it to the finals.”
