Zverev Gets Ill

The world No. 2 player Alexander Zverev has revealed the cause of his recent physical struggles, so he won’t be competing at this week’s China Open.

Only a few weeks before his loss to the American in the US Open quarterfinal, Zverev was defeated by Fritz again in his first singles match at the Laver Cup on Saturday. Fritz and Ben Shelton defeated him and Carlos Alcaraz in the doubles just one day before that setback.

On the last day of competition, Zverev, however, made amends for his mistakes as he helped Team Europe defeat Team World 13-11 by defeating Frances Tiafoe in a final set tie-breaker.

However, Zverev’s performance during the tournament was obviously subpar, and he has now confirmed that he is suffering from pneumonia.

Zverev told this in a recent interview: “Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the physical difficulties I’ve had in recent months. I have to take care of my health first so that I can compete again as soon as possible.”

He added: “I am very disappointed that I had to withdraw from the China Open. I will miss my Chinese fans in Beijing and hope to be able to play in front of them again soon.”
