Alexander Zverev has officially withdrawn from the China Open, just a day after helping Team Europe secure the Laver Cup trophy. Despite his participation in the tournament, Zverev struggled with his physical condition throughout the three-day event in Berlin, which has now led to his decision to skip the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing.
The German played in three matches during the Laver Cup. On the first day, Zverev teamed up with Carlos Alcaraz in doubles, but they suffered a defeat. On the second day, he faced Taylor Fritz in singles but again lost, struggling to breathe at times during the match and not performing at his usual level. In his final match, Zverev managed a dramatic comeback win against Frances Tiafoe, a victory that allowed Alcaraz to secure the overall win for Team Europe. However, Zverev’s health struggles were apparent, as he admitted to not feeling his best.
When asked about his health during the Laver Cup, Zverev maintained that he felt fine, despite having played the most matches on the ATP Tour this season. Yet, the accumulation of match time and the physical toll of the Laver Cup likely contributed to his decision to withdraw from the China Open.
Zverev’s status for future events, including the Shanghai Masters, remains uncertain, though he has also decided not to participate in the Davis Cup Final 8. With two months left in the season and having already spent 172 hours on the court, Zverev will likely choose to preserve his body for the remaining key tournaments of the year.
