On September 21, Carlos Alcaraz made a strong statement criticizing the tennis schedule, saying it would kill us.
Currently competing in his 13th tournament of 2024, the 21-year-old winner of the French Open and Wimbledon is in the Laver Cup. The Spanish player, who won three titles and an Olympic silver medal in Paris, had already played fifty singles matches in 2024 before travelling to Berlin.
While Alcaraz acknowledged that players had differing views on the matter, he felt that the schedule was extremely restricted.
Alcaraz said on Sept 21 after defeating Ben Shelton in straight sets at the Laver Cup: “Probably they are going to kill us in some way. Right now there are a lot of injuries. A lot of good players are going to miss a lot of tournaments because of that.”
He went on to say that he occasionally found it difficult to stay motivated while on tour due to the hectic schedule.
He added: “Sometimes, you don’t want to go to a tournament. I’m not going to lie – I have felt this way a few times already. Sometimes I don’t feel motivated at all. But as I’ve said many, many times, I play my best tennis when I smile and enjoy it on the court. That’s the best option to keep motivating (myself).”
Alcaraz was shocked to lose in the second round of the US Open, where he won his first Grand Slam title in 2022, to Botic van de Zandschulp, who was ranked 74th at the time.
He acknowledged that by skipping a longer vacation between the Olympics and New York, he had made a mistake.
