During his 2024 Laver Cup match against Daniil Medvedev, Frances Tiafoe stated that he had moments of feeling like Roger Federer. Tiafoe was able to rally and give Team World the victory even though she had lost the opening set and was behind.
The 2022 and 2024 US Open semifinalist’s ATP Tour head-to-head record against the Russian player was 0-5 going into their Saturday, September 21 match. After a commanding 6-3 victory in the opening set, Medvedev appeared to be certain that Tiafoe’s losing streak would not break.
But as soon as Medvedev began to make mistakes, Tiafoe improved his own play and won the second set 6-4. The third and final set ended in a first-to-10-point match tiebreak, as is customary in Laver Cup play. In this instance, the American was in the lead, with Medvedev mostly trailing behind. In the end, Tiafoe prevailed 10-5 in the tiebreak to earn a point for Team World.
During his on-court interview following the match, Tiafoe was questioned about how he was able to reverse Medvedev’s position. He claimed that, with the help of his interactions with his Team World teammates, he was able to make the match enjoyable for himself.
Tiafoe hilariously laughed in the post-match press conference and said: “I just started having fun, laughing with my team, laughing with my team over there and here. Just having a bit of fun and I started really finding my rhythm. Court’s obviously much slower than I’ve been used to playing on so it’s tough playing Daniil on this court but yeah, midway in the second set and in the tiebreak I felt like I was Roger Federer, honestly.”
