In a recent interview, Roger Federer discussed the style of play of the younger players. He discovered that young players lack variety based on his observations. Federer quickly clarified, though, that Alcaraz does not fit into that synopsis.
To put it simply, the former world No. 1 finds success with the Spanish star’s renowned drop-shot technique.
The 43-year-old is in Berlin to watch Team Europe play Team World in the Laver Cup. On September 17, he arrived in Berlin and got to know the team captains, John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. Federer gave a critique of contemporary tennis before the competition got underway.
The sport has changed over time. Players benefit from a distinct game style that was prevalent in the early 2000s thanks to improved coaching techniques and technology. Federer became interested in this in turn. Recently, the Swiss icon emphasized how gameplay has changed in the current generation to show less variety. The lack of a versatile game bothers him, even though he thinks the intensity has been maintained.
He talked about it recently and said: “I think the game is where it was, maybe just a step higher. Maybe there is a lack of variation, but that is because they are all handers, they don’t use the slice as much nowadays. So naturally we don’t see as many drop shots, obviously, Alcaraz does it a bit differently. For the most part, I still enjoy watching tennis.”
🇨🇭🎾 Roger Federer believes ‘modern’ tennis has less variety, but the level is similar to past generations:
