Alcaraz Worried

Following his shocking defeat at the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz made a comeback, but there were concerning indications for the French Open and Wimbledon champion.

In front of a stunned Valencia crowd, Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic defeated Alcaraz in the opening set. The Spanish player eventually won the match when his opponent withdrew from the match due to injury after losing the second set.

After that, he and Marcel Granollers prevailed in a doubles match to complete Spain’s 3-0 victory in the tie, putting them in position to advance to the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga in November.

Alcaraz talked after the match and said: “Pretty busy day. I’m first of all really happy with playing a good match in singles and a pretty good match in doubles. I’m a little bit tired, I’m not going to lie. [Machac] is a dangerous player. I started a bit nervous. I had a few opportunities, I didn’t take them but I was strong mentally and kept fighting. I tried to keep calm, and positive in the difficult first set. Then to keep on the pressure and I think for that reason he might have felt physical problems.”

His workload won’t let up, though, as he still has matches in Asia to play before making an appearance in the Laver Cup later this month. Alcaraz acknowledged that he was worn down after losing at the US Open, and many have suggested he should take more time off the court.

He added: “The tennis schedule is so tight. I’ve been playing a lot of matches lately, you know, with Roland Garros, with Wimbledon, Olympic Games. I took a little break after the Olympic Games. I thought it was enough. It was really helpful for me. Probably it wasn’t enough.”
