After losing to Jannik Sinner in the US Open final, Taylor Fritz acknowledged that he felt like he had almost let a lot of people down.
He was competing to become the first male American to win the singles championship in New York since 2003’s Andy Roddick. Fritz is certain that this Grand Slam final won’t be his last, having just experienced it firsthand.
Although he was unable to become the first Grand Slam winner in American history since Andy Roddick won at Flushing Meadows in 2003, the Californian is confident that he can make more deep runs in the future.
In his post-match interview, Fritz said: “Congratulations to Jannik—he was too good. I know we have been waiting for an American champion for a long time – sorry I couldn’t get it done. I am going to keep working and I will get it done next time. Not yet. There are obviously a lot of positives, and when I get some time to cool down, then I’ll be happy about the fact that I made it to the finals and stuff like that. But right now I’m pretty just disappointed in how, like, just a lot of things on the court, how I played, how I hit certain shots. It sucks.”
He added: “And I’m not saying that it necessarily would have made a difference. I don’t know if it would have, but I just would have liked to have played better and given myself a better chance. It’s really disappointing right now. I feel like the American fans have been wanting a men’s champion for a long time, and I just, I don’t know, I’m pretty upset with how I played. I feel like, I don’t know, I feel like I almost let a lot of people down.”
