Carlos Alcaraz’s shocking US Open defeat was attributed to the same factor as Emma Raducanu’s.
Following his back-to-back Grand Slam victories over the summer, the world No. 3 was among the favourites to take home the trophy at Flushing Meadows.
However, in the second round, he was taken aback by rising star Botic van de Zandsculp. Alcaraz gave his explanation for why he crashed out after having some time to consider his loss.
Alcaraz is back competing for his nation this week in the Davis Cup group stage. Spain will host the remaining Group B matches in Valencia, starting on Wednesday with a match against Czechia.
The four-time Major winner will be playing on a match court for the first time since he was eliminated in the second round of the US Open, which marked his earliest Grand Slam defeat in over three years. Alcaraz has now responded to his significant annoyance.
Alcaraz talked about it and said: “[The North American swing] was a tour that I hoped would be better. I haven’t managed to play at the level I would have liked, but in the end, it’s very difficult to perform at the level you want every day and you have to be prepared to accept things as they come.”
He added: “I think I lacked preparation after a very intense summer, with few days of rest, disconnection and training for the American tour and to get there in the best possible way. It’s an experience from which to learn for the future.”
