Appeal filing deadlines are approaching in the case of Jannik Sinner, the recent U.S. Open champion who was cleared of doping.
There is probably not much longer for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and Italy’s anti-doping agency, Nado Italia, to contest the ruling made by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on August 20.
After the parties received the decision, they had 21 days to file an appeal. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which is located in Switzerland, would receive any appeals.
Sinner tested positive for anabolic steroids twice in March, but the ITIA found that the performance-enhancing drug had accidentally entered his system through a physiotherapist’s massage. As a result, Sinner was not suspended.
After the doping case was made public last month, Sinner, who was ranked #1, defeated Taylor Fritz in the U.S. Open final on Sunday. Sinner’s U.S. Open title may be in jeopardy in the event of an appeal, but he and his legal team have presented comprehensive scientific proof to support the validity of his story.
Sinner acknowledged that the months leading up to the resolution of his case were difficult after winning his second Grand Slam championship.
Sinner talked about it and said: “It was very difficult for me to enjoy certain moments. So whoever knows me better knows that something was wrong. But during this tournament, slowly I restarted to feel a little bit more how I am as a person.”
