After rival Jannik Sinner won his first US Open, Carlos Alcaraz sent the Italian an eight-word message of congratulations. In the final, Sinner decisively defeated Taylor Fritz, the home team’s favourite.

The 23-year-old defeated Fritz twice in the closing set after trailing 5-4 in the first set. The match was won in straight sets. Having won the Australian Open at the beginning of 2024, he achieved his second Grand Slam of the year with his 6-3 6-4 7-5 victory.

Sinner now trails Alcaraz by just two major titles, but the Spaniard was delighted to congratulate the victorious youngster. Alcaraz used the social media platform X to quote-tweet the US Open’s announcement of Sinner’s victory.

With his victory over Fritz, Sinner has solidified his status as the top player in the world. He now has an advantage of over 2,000 points over Alexander Zverev, who is ranked second. Alcaraz’s unexpected early withdrawal at Flushing Meadows has dropped him to third.

The 21-year-old wrote: “Congratulations, Jannik! You deserve it! Enjoy the moment!”
