After defeating Wakana Sonobe in New York, Mika Stojsavljevic became the first British champion in fifteen years at the US Open girls’ division.

The 15-year-old defeated Japan’s Sonobe with ease, winning 6-4, 6-4. The junior’s first Grand Slam victory comes after her best run in 2023 until she advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

She is the first British girl to win the title at Flushing Meadows since Heather Watson did so in 2009.

Stojsavljevic expressed her feelings after the win and said: “I’m super happy and super grateful. Thank you to my family for supporting me back home and thank you to the crowd here; you’ve been great.”

In the semi-final on Friday, Stojsavljevic defeated American third seed Iva Jovic, who advanced to the second round of the main women’s draw.

She started playing tennis at the Ealing Lawn Tennis Club when she was five years old, and she credits five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova as her tennis inspiration.

In April, Stojsavljevic won the W35 Nottingham ITF singles title after defeating Tamira Paszek, a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist.
