Ahead of championship weekend, former winners Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova held court once more at the US Open. Both players made elegant returns to Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Celebrity status has always been a source of attraction for the final Grand Slam of the year, drawing famous people from pop culture, music, sports, and other industries. Clearly, the stadium has also been graced by the legends of our own sport.
Sharapova, who won her second Grand Slam title here in 2006, and Federer, who won the US Open five times in a row between 2004 and 2008, have both had a busy schedule of events with sponsors and partners during the New York City fortnight. However, the previous world champions also scheduled a hike to Flushing Meadows to observe the action.
Although his remarks garnered media attention, the talk on social media was centred around his US Open qualification, which appeared to have been updated since the Swiss player formally hung up his racket in 2022.
