The mother of Jack Draper has changed her mind about going to his match against Jannik Sinner at the US Open this evening.
The 22-year-old squares off against the Italian, who needs just two wins to claim his first Grand Slam victory. Up until now, Draper has been the competition’s biggest success story. The British player has advanced to the final four without dropping a set.
When she first spoke earlier this week, she stated that she was going to watch the match on TV with a glass of wine while staying at home in Surrey.
When asked if she would be travelling by plane to New York, she responded: “It’s in the back of my mind, but I’ve been watching every match with my dad, with my dog, swearing and cursing, jumping up and down, clapping, having a glass of wine at the same time. I’ve got both of my boys out there. I think they’re doing fine without me, so probably not.”
She then revealed on Thursday that she had changed her mind at the last minute and would now be attending the match in person by scheduling a late flight to New York.
She said: “I’ve got a flight booked this evening. I only decided this morning to go.”
This indicates that on Friday night when Draper takes the court to play Sinner, he will have his mother in the crowd. His Italian opponent, who is the clear favourite to win the US Open going into the match, will put him to the ultimate test of his career.
