Frances Tiafoe has advanced to his second Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open, where he will face fellow American Taylor Fritz. Tiafoe’s progression came after Grigor Dimitrov was forced to retire due to a leg injury while trailing 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3, 4-1. Despite Dimitrov’s valiant efforts, the Bulgarian’s injury proved too severe, cutting short what had been a thrilling quarterfinal.

“Obviously, it’s not the way I want to get through. But obviously happy to get through,” Tiafoe remarked after the match. Tiafoe, who played with electric energy and aggression, captivated the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, displaying impressive all-court skills and a relentless approach at the net. He converted 17 of 31 net points and created 14 break opportunities, capitalizing on six.

Reflecting on the match, Tiafoe said, “It was a really, really high-level match. I liked where I was at in the third regardless. But obviously, I didn’t want it to end like that.”

Tiafoe will now face Fritz in the first all-American men’s semifinal at a major since 2005. This matchup is set to be a thrilling encounter as Tiafoe looks to end his six-match losing streak against Fritz, with a chance to secure the top American spot in the rankings. “Friday is going to be one hell of a day,” Tiafoe said, looking forward to the clash.
