In the third round of the 2024 US Open on Saturday, Caroline Wozniacki defeated Jessika Ponchet 6-3, 6-2, matching her 2023 performance, in which the Dane advanced to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows following a three-year break.
To advance to the quarterfinals, the 34-year-old Wozniacki will take on Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Two-time Open finalist Wozniacki, who hasn’t played since 2014, announced her retirement from the game in 2020. During her time off, she welcomed two children with her life partner, former Knicks forward David Lee.
Wozniacki said after the recent win: “I’m thrilled to be into the second week, of course. It’s always nice. I love playing here. Any time I get to play another match here, I’m very pleased with that. I’m so happy to be through to the next round. It was tricky today because I didn’t really know my opponent. I never met her before. She played a bit of unorthodox tennis compared to other players. It was really difficult to read her game, so just really happy to be through.”
Wozniacki recently demonstrated her daughter’s forehand strength in a humorous video, and it appears that she is loving every second of it.
