At the 2024 US Open, there were some worrisome scenes during Andrey Rublev’s match against Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round on Sunday after the Russian injured himself out of frustration. Rublev was losing the match when he angrily struck his hands against the racket, causing them to bleed.
Rublev had defeated Jiri Lehecka and Arthur Rinderknech before facing Dimitrov. In contrast, the Bulgarian had already won three straight sets, the most recent of which came against Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.
Dimitrov got off to a fast start at Arthur Ashe Stadium, leading 4-1 after two breakaways of serve. That’s when the sixth seed hurt himself because Rublev lost his temper. The brawl swiftly resumed after a medical time-out was declared. A few moments later, Andrey Rublev lost the set 3-6.
The 26-year-old’s volatile disposition has been seen on the tennis court before. He hurt his knee during a painful racket smash earlier this year in his opening-round defeat at the French Open, and he repeated the same mistake in his third-round loss.
