At the US Open, Mackenzie McDonald and Maria Mateas have teamed up. In the US Open mixed doubles competition, Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas might not have advanced past the opening round, but another powerful couple made a strong start.

Taking advantage of their wildcard into the draw, McDonald and his girlfriend Mateas defeated the French team Fabrice Martin and Alexandra Panova 6-4 2-6 [10-8]. Despite being together for two and a half years, the demands of the professional tennis circuit make it difficult for the couple to spend time together.

Mateas was scheduled to leave for another tournament in France this weekend, but the two are now making the most of the competition to extend their relationship.

McDonald talked about it and said: “This means we get to spend more days together, too, because there are tournaments right around the corner. Our days being on tour, both of us, it’s a lot. So we cherish every moment we get together.”

Mateas was thrilled to win her first main draw match. Mateas and McDonald made their Grand Slam debuts in the mixed doubles last year.

Mateas said: “Obviously we know each other better than anyone, but I didn’t want to let him down in a way. I don’t know. And then this year, I just went out there, and I just wanted to have a lot of fun and really enjoy it no matter what. And we definitely did that.”
