The Spanish third seed Carlos Alcaraz’s Grand Slam winning run came to an abrupt end on Thursday at the U.S. Open when he lost to the unseeded Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1 7-5 6-4 in the second round.

Given his 15-match Grand Slam winning streak, the Spaniard was favoured in their second-round match on Thursday, August 29. In contrast, the Dutchman had not advanced past the third round in his previous eight Grand Slam main draw outings.

The Spanish tennis player, who had an incredible season winning the French Open and Wimbledon and taking home a silver medal from the Olympics in Paris, was among the strong favourites to win the final Grand Slam of the year.

For the first time since the 1999 US Open, not a single Spanish tennis player has reached the third round in the men’s singles draw of a Grand Slam.
