Jannik Sinner advanced to the US Open third round by defeating American Alex Michelsen 6-4 6-0 6-2, setting up a matchup with Australian Chris O’Connell.

Sinner defeated Michelsen in 99 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, earning his 30th straight hard-court victory of 2024 and leading the ATP Tour. Sinner converted eight of his sixteen break-point opportunities.

In the opening round on Tuesday at Flushing Meadows, Sinner faltered against American Mackenzie McDonald, dropping the first set before bouncing back to win 2-6 6-2 6-1 6-2.

He had no such issues on Thursday against Michelsen. Sinner did not look back after winning a first set through multiple break trades and going on to complete a commanding victory in one hour and forty-nine minutes.

Sinner said after the win: “I feel like I can improve still a couple of things. But you have to be obviously very happy to be in the next round and so I’m just trying to get better as a player.”

Sinner stated that even though he is grateful for his current victories, he still strives to improve every day. He said he was going to work on his game on his day off.

Sinner expressed his thoughts about it and said: “I feel like my level is not there where I want to be at, regardless of the results. We just go day-by-day at the moment. Tomorrow I have one day off, [I will] try to get into the rhythm again, having a good ball coming to me, trying to hit it in the way I want to. But every win is great, it is good to be in a position. Now Round 3 is starting, I am looking forward to raising my level day by day, so let’s see what I can do.”
