Coco Gauff demonstrated her relentless commitment to excellence at the US Open, refusing to celebrate her second-round victory over Tatjana Maria as she immediately returned to practice. The 20-year-old American, who is eyeing her eighth singles title, secured a 6-4, 6-0 win in just 80 minutes, but was quick to acknowledge areas for improvement.

“It was a tricky match,” Gauff admitted after the win. Despite her strong start, winning seven consecutive games, Gauff recognized flaws in her performance, particularly in her service game. “Obviously could serve better, but off the ground and at the net there were some errors, but I think every time it was the right decision to make. It was just about execution.”

Gauff’s determination was evident when she returned to the court for a late-night practice session with coach Brad Gilbert, focusing on her serves, which she admitted were “not great at all” during the match. Despite landing only 43% of her first serves, Gauff managed to avoid being broken, a fact she credited to some luck.

Reflecting on recent struggles, including early exits in Cincinnati, Canada, and the 2024 Olympics, Gauff emphasized her drive to meet her own expectations. “The last couple of weeks were tough. And I was like I have to do this and do that but I don’t have to prove anything to anyone except myself. These two weeks are just about proving all the expectations that I have on myself.”

As Gauff continues her US Open campaign, her refusal to settle and her focus on constant improvement highlight her determination to achieve greatness on the court.
