INJURED Barty withdraws from Eastbourne, Wimbledon probably not in doubt

Barty withdraws from Eastbourne, trying to recover in time for Wimbledon

Ashleigh Barty, the new world no.1, has withdrawn from Eastbourne tournament as a long-standing injury has flared up. She will try her best to recover in time to take part in all important Wimbledon tournament next week. It also means that the new world no.1 will not be able to prepare for Wimbledon in a way she would have ideally liked to. At the moment, Barty has planned to watch the Australia-England clash in the cricket world cup at Lord’s on Tuesday and take some inspiration from the Australian cricket team (Barty was earlier a cricketer).

Barty was excited about watching the cricket world cup match:

“I’ve never been to a World Cup match with the guys, so it would be great if it happened,” Barty, a former cricketer herself with Brisbane Heat, said.

About her injury, she was hopeful that she will recover in time for Wimbledon.

“We’re going to take a few days off and get the arm right and be ready for next week, It’s something I manage. It doesn’t require medication at this stage, It’s an injury that we’ve had to manage since I was 16 years old. When we have a spike in load, soreness comes up. It’s just a bone stress injury and we need to look after it, but I think we’ll be fine and be ready to go next week.”

Barty became the top-ranked player in the world after she won the Nature Valley Classic last week. She was delighted to be the new world no.1 and said:

“It’s an amazing place to be. It’s hard to put into words what we have been able to achieve over the last few years and to be where we are is just incredible, but certainly, nothing changes now.”
