Marketa Vondrousova undergoes surgery on her left shoulder

Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, announced on social media on Wednesday that she underwent surgery on her left shoulder.

After losing in the first round at the All England Club on July 2, the Czech left-hander has not participated in any competitions. After losing her opening match at Wimbledon the following year, Vondrousova became the first women’s champion since 1994, when she was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro at Centre Court.

Vondrousova became the first female champion from the unseeded bracket at the grass-court Grand Slam event last year after winning the title there.

Vondrousova pulled out of the U.S. Open, which starts in New York on Monday, and the Olympics in Paris.

Vondrousova wrote on her Instagram: “I’ve been struggling with shoulder pain for a few months now and there was no other option but to go for surgery. Everything went well and I’ll start rehab soon. See you back on the court, happy and healthy.”
