At the Stars of the Open charity event, which took place before the US Open, Novak Djokovic teamed up with tennis legend John McEnroe to play a doubles match against Carlos Alcaraz and Andre Agassi. Following his triumph at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Djokovic shared with Alcaraz a message he had conveyed after the match.
Up until the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Djokovic had not won a single title. Following victories over Lorenzo Musetti, Rafael Nadal, Dominik Koepfer, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Matthew Ebden, the Serb advanced to the gold medal match against Alcaraz. There, he put on a resolute display to defeat the Spaniard 7-6(7), 7-6(7) and win his first Olympic gold medal. With the victory, he joined Nadal, Agassi, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams as the only players to accomplish a career golden slam.
During an on-court interview at the Stars of the Open charity event, Djokovic recalled their Paris Olympics match and said he thanked the 21-year-old for allowing him to win the gold medal. Alcaraz has a bright future ahead of him, according to the 37-year-old, who also hinted that he may win multiple Olympic gold medals.
Djokovic talked about it and said: “I told Carlos at the net when we finished the final that I was very grateful to him for letting me win the gold. He’s probably going to have like 3 gold medals before he retires.”
