Emma Raducanu Says Before The Us Open, Get A Grip, As A Brit Takes A Break From Tennis

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has sparked debate over her unconventional preparations for the upcoming tournament in New York. Instead of competing in the qualifying events in Canada and Cincinnati, Raducanu chose to return to the UK, where she continued her training and took some time off to recharge.

Raducanu shared moments from her break on Instagram, captioning her post “get a grip.” The post included photos from a visit to Oxford, as well as a mirror selfie taken during a gym session. This isn’t her first visit to Oxford ahead of a Grand Slam; she previously traveled there with fellow British tennis player Fran Jones before Wimbledon earlier this year.

Jones, who formed a bond with Raducanu during their time as teammates at the Billie Jean King Cup, spoke about the importance of taking time away from the sport. Reflecting on their visit to Oxford, Jones said, “It was just a bit spontaneous really, we felt like going and we love coffee so some great little coffee spots. It was just a good opportunity for a day off.”

The break seemed to benefit Raducanu ahead of Wimbledon, where she advanced to the second week of the tournament, defeating the No. 9 seed Maria Sakkari along the way. As she prepares for the US Open, Raducanu will be hoping for similar success.

However, her decision to skip the Olympic Games and focus on the hard court season in North America has been met with mixed reactions. Despite the controversy, Raducanu silenced her critics by reaching the quarter-finals in Washington, demonstrating her readiness for the challenges ahead.
