What is Clostebol, the anabolic agent found in Jannik Sinner doping test

Tennis star Jannik Sinner tested positive for Clostebol during a doping test, raising ethical and health concerns. Clostebol, derived from testosterone, is banned in sports due to its performance-enhancing effects. The incident highlights the need for strict adherence to anti-doping regulations.

Costebol Sinner

Clostebol is an anabolic steroid derived from testosterone. It is known for its ability to promote muscle growth and enhance physical performance. In the medical field, Clostebol is sometimes used in dermatological and ophthalmological treatments, often in the form of topical creams or ointments. However, its use in sports is strictly prohibited due to its performance-enhancing effects.

The substance gained attention recently when tennis star Jannik Sinner tested positive for Clostebol during a doping test. Sinner, who has been a prominent figure in the tennis world, faced scrutiny after the substance was detected in his system. The incident highlighted the ongoing challenges athletes face in ensuring that they do not inadvertently consume banned substances.

Clostebol’s anabolic properties make it attractive for those looking to gain a competitive edge, but it also raises significant ethical and health concerns. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) includes Clostebol on its list of banned substances, emphasizing the importance of fair play and the health risks associated with steroid use.

In Sinner’s case, the positive test was attributed to accidental contamination through a topical treatment used by his physiotherapist. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and strict adherence to anti-doping regulations to maintain the integrity of sports.

This is from the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency)

“Clostebol is an anabolic agent prohibited at all times under Section S1 of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List.  Under the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC), when a player returns an Adverse Analytical Finding for a non-specified substance, like clostebol, a provisional suspension is automatically applied.

The player has the right to apply to an independent tribunal chair appointed by Sport Resolutions to have that provisional suspension lifted.”
