Kent’s historic Chatham Docks are about to undergo a makeover thanks to a new leisure complex. Proposals to redevelop the former Machine Shop 8 into a bustling hub with restaurants and a padel tennis center have been submitted to Medway Council.

The location is a Grade II listed building that was first constructed in 1845 as a dry dock cover. Recent inspections and maintenance have confirmed that the building’s skeletal, cast-iron frame is secure and stable enough to support the suggested modifications. By combining contemporary recreational activities with the site’s rich heritage, the redevelopment seeks to revitalize this historic landmark.

The complex’s central hall will have five padel tennis courts. Padel tennis is a hybrid sport that uses a solid perforated paddle and a smaller court to combine elements of squash and tennis. This sport is well-known for being accessible to players of all ages and skill levels and has been growing in popularity globally.

The western side of the frame will be converted into a dining area with multiple new restaurants in addition to the padel tennis center. These restaurants will provide a range of culinary delights, and their outdoor seating will give diners a beautiful view of the docks. To guarantee inclusivity, the complex will also feature a new parking lot with spaces designated for disabled drivers and barrier-free access.

The current building has the potential to be repurposed while maintaining its historical significance thanks to the proposed development. The project is expected to significantly improve Kent’s dining and leisure options if approved by Medway Council, where the plans are currently awaiting approval.
