Ashleigh Barty and Julia Goerges clashed in the finals of the Nature Valley Classic for the 3rd time in their careers. Barty became the new champion of the Nature Valley Classic tournament by beating the world no.19 Goerges.
Ashleigh Barty, the French Open champion was just a win away before the start of the finals in Birmingham to become the first Australian to become the world no.1 in 43 years. She surely made her country proud of her rare achievement today.
The Match
Goerges opened the game very well and created 2 break points but could not convert. After this Barty was on the top of her game and dominated rest of the set breaking Goerges in the 6th game to lead 4-2. This edge was enough for the Australian to win the set 6-3.
In the second set, the German gave a tough fight to the new world no.1 by breaking the opening serve of the Australian. Goerges was ahead in the set leading 3-1 but the Australian broke the world no.19 in the 5th game to bridge the gap 3-2. Barty again broke in the 11th game to lead 6-5 and then held on to her serve to win the set 7-5.
Barty won the match 6-3 7-5 in 1 hour and 28 minutes to become the new Nature Valley Classic champion this year.
