One of the few competitions that mixes men’s and women’s divisions without dividing the prize money equally is the Cincinnati tournament.

This season, the hardcourt event has welcomed two new champions, and they have both displayed remarkable on-court abilities. Despite physical limitations and injury concerns, Sinner defeated Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev in the men’s singles to advance to the championship match. After that, the Italian player faced Frances Tiafoe in the summit match, defeating the American in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-2.

In the meantime, Sabalenka defeated rivals Iga Swiatek, Liudmila Samsonova, and Elina Svitolina in the women’s division to guarantee a spot in the tournament’s championship round. In her match against Jessica Pegula, the No. 3 seed encountered little opposition from the American celebrity and won 6-3, 7-5. But things quickly turned south.

There was a significant difference in their prize money that was noticed when they each picked up their paychecks. Interestingly, Sabalenka was given half of Sinner’s money. The Belarusian left with just $523,485 whereas the men’s champion took home an astounding $1,049,460.

Even though Grand Slams have addressed these disparities, some circuit events still have a gender pay gap. In addition, WTA players and PTPA members expressed their displeasure with the gap at the 2023 Italian Open, following their announcement that they would attain pay parity by 2025.
